kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa - July 1-October 31, 2009 : kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa is an exhibition of portraits by artist Kip Fulbeck, who traveled the country photographing Hapa of all ages and walks of life. Once a derogatory label derived from the Hawaiian word for half, the word Hapa has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Rim ancestry. Fulbeck’s work seeks to address in words and images the one question that Hapa are frequently asked: “What are you?” By pairing portraits of Hapa—unadorned by make-up, jewelry, and clothing—along with their handwritten statements on who they are, Fulbeck has produced powerful yet intimate expressions of beauty and identity. kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa is an artist’s attempt to explore Hapa—who now number in the millions—and it offers a complex perspective on the changing reality of contemporary America. Kip Fulbeck is an award-winning photographer, filmmaker, writer, and spoken-word artist whose work has been exhibited worldwide. He is professor and chair of Art at the University of California, Santa Barbara. kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa is organized by the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California, and is supported, in part, by the James Irvine Foundation. Promoting Peace Through Education: Lecture by Greg Mortenson - March 30, 2009 : UNC was honored to host Greg Mortenson, co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea. Because of the overwhelming interest of people across the state of North Carolina, the lecture was viewable in multiple places on campus as well as online. Photos by Megan Hamilton Greg Mortenson is the co-founder of nonprofit Central Asia Institute, founder of Pennies For Peace, and co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea which has been a New York Times bestseller since its January 2007 release, and was Time Magazine Asia Book of The Year. Mortenson is a living hero to rural communities of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where he has gained the trust of Islamic leaders, military commanders, government officials and tribal chiefs from his tireless effort to champion education, especially for girls. He is one of few foreigners who has worked extensively for fifteen years (spending over 67 months) in the region now considered the front lines of the war on terror. Mortenson advocates girls’ education as the top priority to promote economic development, peace and prosperity. Hosted by the UNC Student Government Distinguished Speakers Series, Douglass Hunt Lecture Series of the Carolina Seminars, and Office of International Affairs Global Education Distinguished Speakers Series with support from the James M. Negotiating Peace: Lecture by Betty Bigombe - March 26, 2009 : Known as one of Africa’s leading peace makers, Betty Bigombe has worked tirelessly to end the violence in her native Uganada through peace talks and negotiations. Elected a minister of parliament in 1986, Bigombe was already a political leader in her home country of Uganda prior to her legendary mediation efforts. Shortly after her election, she was appointed “Minister of State for Pacification of Northern Uganada” to resolve the conflicts between the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel group led by Joseph Kony, and the Ugandan government. For over a decade, the LRA has laid siege to the region, killing innocent civilians and violating human rights, including the enforcement of child soldiering. Unstoppable in her quest for peace, Bigombe organized what is today known as the “Bigombe Talks,” which formed the groundwork for future reconciliation efforts. In 1994, Bigombe was honored for her role in the peace talks and was named Uganda’s Woman of the Year. Bigombe left Uganda in 1996 to pursue graduate studies at Harvard and later supported Ugandan stability through her work with the Carter Center and U.S. Institute of Peace. Bigombe is still considered one of the leading experts on peace efforts in the country. FedEx Global Education Center Open House - September 3, 2008 : UNC provides countless opportunities to explore other cultures and to become more globally aware! In fact, the FedEx Global Education Center houses many of the university’s primary international units dedicated to global learning and services. At the Open House, hosted annually, representatives from each of the deaprtments housed in the Center are available to answer questions and discuss the services and resources they provide. Each unit offers samples candy and food from all over the world and the Global Cup Cafe, housed within the Global Education Center, provides delicious coffee samples!
