Los Chapeljileños - December 6, 2007 : There’s no simple way to describe the music of John and Carmen Chasteen—an eclectic mix of North and South American folk styles, rhythmically up-beat with strong vocal harmonies and lyrics in both English and Spanish. Some songs are old standards from Carmen’s native Colombia, some sound like down-home North Carolina, and some speak to current political issues, such as immigration.

Triangle Taiko - November 15, 2007 : Triangle Taiko has become a favorite for UNC students and staff, not to mention the Triangle community! Their first performance at the FedEx Global Education Center drew a standing room only crowd and left hearts thumbing and feet tapping long after the sound of drums died down for the evening. The members of Triangle Taiko allowed audience members to try their hands on the large drums.

Each group offers delicious food and drinks from all over the world and the Global Cup Cafe provides coffee samples!

Pamina Devi: A Cambodian Magic Flute, Lecture with Sophiline Cheam Shapiro - October 3, 2007 : In collaboration with Carolina Performing Arts, the Office of International Affairs hosted dancer/choreographer and artistic director of the Khmer Arts Ensemble, Sophiline Cheam Shapiro at the FedEx Global Education Center. Shapiro provided an insider's view of her latest piece "Pamina Devi: A Cambodian Magic Flute," which was performed at Memorial Hall. Shapiro explained the elaborate movement language of Cambodian classical dance and how the themes of enlightenment change and transformation found in Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute" were revealed in her adaptation. Audience members were privileged to see and hear the brilliantly intricate movements of the dancers and sounds of the musical ensemble.

Gamelan Nyai Saraswati - April 28, 2007 : In April 2007 the FedEx Global Education Center hosted a live wayang kulit, or shadow puppet show, with world-renowned dhalang (puppeteer) Midiyanto and with gamelan music supplied by Gamelan Nyai Saraswati and visiting guest artist Joko Sutrisno. Wayang Kulit serves as a showcase for the dhalang's skill in presenting traditional stories from ancient epics, frequently combined with comments and lessons from contemporary life. Javanese shadow puppet plays serve as a reflection of the many influences on Javanese and Indonesian culture over the centuries. Though traditional wayang last from dusk to dawn, for practical reasons this performance was abbreviated to accomodate a normal western concert length. This performance was accompanied with live music by Gamelan Nyai Saraswati, the UNC Department of Music's ensemble specializing in the music of Central Javanese gamelan. The gamelan is a large orchestra of vertically- and horizontally-racked bronze gongs, bronze metallophones, drums, and other delicate elaborating instruments. The group was led from the kendhang (drum) by visiting Javanese artist Joko Sutrisno, artistic director of the Indonesian Performing Arts Association of Minnesota.

When Artistic Expression Becomes a Livelihood: The stories and handiwork of Indian and Kenyan Craftswomen - Fall 2007 : The FedEx Global Education Center hosted an exhibition featuring the textiles of Indian and Kenyan craftswomen along with their stories. UNC graduate Marissa Heyl watched the embroiderers when she visited India during her UNC cundergraduate career. In one area, there is no written language, she said, but “embroidery is used to record experience and serves as a form of language. The artisans, in effect, become the historians of their community.” Beacon of Hope is a non-profit community center started by a Kenyan business woman, Jane Wathome, in 2002. Its mission is to bring hope to women in poor communities who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS by empowering and equipping them to meet their spiritual, physical, emotional and economic needs. These women create beautiful, hand-dyed wool rugs, which were on display as part of this exhibit.

K-12 International Fair - November 16, 2007 : UNC’s Carolina Navigators program hosted Carborro High students who shared analytical posters on international topics that they created with the help of UNC students involved in an APPLES International Education service learning course. The event also featured an engaging performance of Samoan dance from Smith Middle School students.
