Ice Counterpoint: Encounters in Antarctica and the Arctic : A multimedia artistic collaboration, Ice Counterpoint views the Earth’s Polar Regions through the artistic collaboration of music, art, environmental soundscapes, and photography. The photography, recordings, and video of Antarctica and the High Arctic, taken in 2006 and 2009 by Brooks de Wetter-Smith, are presented along with the polar art of Nerys Levy. Ice Counterpoint is inspired by the extreme conditions, flora and fauna of both regions. Central to this exhibit is intergenerational attention on the importance of preserving the natural environment of those regions, as a part of our struggle to mitigate some of the causes and consequences of world-wide climate change. For a short time, sculptural pieces created by McDougle Middle School students were displayed in conjunction with Ice Counterpoint. This exhibition and supplemental programming are organized by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Office of International Affairs and funded by the Douglass Hunt Lecture Series of the Carolina Seminars supported by the Massey-Weatherspoon Fund. Additional support was provided by the Center for the Study of the American South and the Performing Arts and Special Activities Fund. Esse Quam Videri: Muslim Self Portraits - 9/9/10 : “Esse Quam Videri” – “To Be Rather Than to Seem” – North Carolina state motto In response to the stereotyping of Muslims and in recognition that it is human nature to fear what we do not know, community based artist Todd Drake has worked with Muslims in North Carolina to create self-portraits that share real, rather than seeming, reflections of self to a wider audience. Muslims from a variety of backgrounds and living in a variety of communities across North Carolina participated in this series by working collaboratively with Drake to realize their own vision. Photographs, collaged images, and self-drawn portraits were created with short essays to add context. In some cases, audio recordings and additional information. AFTERMATH : September 15 - November 11, 2010 | FedEx Global Education Center AFTERMATH is an exhibition by artist and Professor elin o'Hara slavick that explores the aftermath of war. The display on three floors of the FedEx Global Education Center includes a selection of works from "Hiroshima: After Aftermath" and "Protesting Cartography: Places the U.S. Has Bombed." Both projects examine aerial bombardment through the use of maps, rubbings, photographs (black and white, color and cyanotypes), drawings and paintings. Slavick has exhibited her work across the U.S. and Europe and in Cuba, Hong Kong, Scotland, England and Canada. She has been a Professor of studio art, theory and practice at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1994. This exhibition is sponsored by the Carolina Asia Center with support from the Center for European Studies, Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies, Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations, Institute for the Study of the Americas, African Studies Center, Center for Global Initiatives and Parr Center for Ethics. CHINA ROAD- A Journey into the Future of a Rising Power (Rob Gifford) 9/20/2010 : Rob Gifford, Shanghai correspondent for National Public Radio, spoke at the Global Education Center on September 20th about what he learned on his 3,000-mile odyssey across China. His speech was based on his 2007 book, “China Road: A Journey into the Future of a Rising Power.” For the book, Gifford followed Route 312, China’s equivalent of U.S. Route 66, from Shanghai to the border with Kazakhstan. The book describes the social and economic changes transforming China and, as one reviewer wrote, is “full of historical and philosophical wisdom about the future of the world’s largest country.” Gifford, a native of the United Kingdom, has reported from around the world for NPR and has served as NPR’s correspondent in Beijing, London and Shanghai. The talk was sponsored by the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, Kenan-Flagler Business School, UNC’s Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, UNC Global, the Office of the Provost, the Phillips Ambassadors, the Center for Global Initiatives and the Carolina Asia Center. AFTERMATH- Noam Chomsky Lecture 9/30/10 : Noam Chomsky spoke at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in conjunction with the exhibition AFTERMATH on display at the FedEx Global Education Center. Noam Chomsky is Institute Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston. A member of the American Academy of Science, he has published widely in both linguistics and current affairs. His books include At War with Asia, Towards a New Cold War, Fateful Triangle: The U. S., Israel and the Palestinians, Necessary Illusions, Hegemony or Survival, Deterring Democracy, Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy and Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media. Hearing is Healing: The Intersection of Music and Public Health 9/21/10 : Discover the power of music to change the world in this lecture and performance by Malawian musician Peter Mawanga. Blending traditional African, jazz, and Caribbean rhythms with modern instrumentation, Peter's music has an international flavor that is nevertheless rooted in the music of his native Malawi. Peter is currently collaborating with UNC alumnus and Fulbright-mtvU recipient Andrew Magill ‘09 on a music project which shares the stories of those infected and affected by AIDS in Malawi. Hear Peter speak about this project and his work mentoring Malawian orphans and street children through music. Also enjoy a video presentation about Peter’s work. Katrina, Haiti, Deepwater Horizon: Building a More Resilient World (Stephen Flynn) 10/6/2010 : Stephen Flynn is the author of The Edge of Disaster: Rebuilding a Resilient Nation (Random House, 2007), and the national bestseller, America the Vulnerable (HarperCollins, 2004). He also served as the lead Homeland Security policy advisor on President Barack Obama's transition team, and is currently a member of the bipartisan National Security Preparedness Group. According to Gavin Smith, Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Natural Hazards and Disasters at UNC Chapel Hill, "Stephen Flynn speaks out on issues that impact the lives of all Americans -- including terrorism, environmental disasters, and natural hazard events -- in the context of national policy. Visualizing Human Rights 11/6/2010 : In an unconventional forum, “Visualizing Human Rights” brings together painters, photographers, writers, poets, filmmakers, and printmakers to put a human face on human rights in an effort to reach beyond traditional academic approaches. The third annual Visualizing Human Rights (VHR) Anti-Conference took place on November 6, 2010 with a Special Film Screening the evening of November 5 at the FedEx Global Education Center at UNC-Chapel Hill. The day started with an intimate interview by WUNC’s Dick Gordon (“The Story”) followed by interactive studios and discussion salons.
